Bloom County was one of my favorite comic strips when I was younger, and even though it hasn't aged too well, there are still some very funny moments in it, and then there's this: a two song flexi disc included with early copies of the collection "Billy And The Boingers: Bootleg". I have wanted to post this on here for some time, as it is a departure from the usual fast and raging punk/metal posts I love to make. So I figured, for my 175th post on this thing, why not have a little fun. Included with this you will find the lyrics and some scans. I promise I'll be back with more metal and punk rock soon, but for now, enjoy.

The Call Of Cthulhu

Here is an adaptation of one of H.P. Lovecraft's best, the classic The Call Of Cthulhu. It is word for word the original text of the story, just in comic book form! This is from John Coulthart's graphic adaptation of Lovecraft stories entitled "The Haunter Of The Dark And Other Grotesque Visions", which is available here. This is the only adaptation I have seen from it, but the pictures on his website make it look really awesome, so I might have to get a copy of it. Just check out the picture of R'lyeh above, which looks alot better than this scanned .pdf file I share with you.

Night Of The Living Dead Prelude
Here is a one shot comic published by Fantaco Enterprises (publishers of such fine horror stuff like Deep Red, Gore Shriek, etc...), which, as it says, is a prelude to the events occurring in George Romero's 1968 classic "Night Of The Living Dead". Fantaco also did a 4 issue mini-series adapting N.O.T.L.D., which i have never been able to track down. Anyways, check this out.

H.P. Lovecraft's "From Beyond", Adapted for comics by P. Craig Russell
This is something new that I've also wanted to try for a while here on scummified. If you know me, you know that i love comic books. it's true. i LOVE comic books. it is a fantastic medium, much neglected and look down upon by people who think that these four color throwaway mags are strictly for kids and should never be read by anyone over the age of 10. I have been reading and collecting comics for as long as i can remember, and have a good sized collection with some books i never thought i would ever have (close to completing a run of EVERY Swamp Thing series, ever). Anyways, i digress. Comics are NOT just for kids, and to make a point, here is P. Craig Russell's adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's "From Beyond" from a 1994 issue of that "premiere adult illustrated magazine" Heavy Metal, that is, well, downright beautiful stuff from a master comics illustrator. Russell has also adapted Wagner's "The Ring Of The Nibelung" and other musical works into comics form, the Robert E. Howard Conan story "The Jewels Of Gwalhur" (available in a very nice and inexpensive hardcover version), and is also a frequent collaborator/adapter of Neil Gaiman. He has a very fine style, and, well, its his fine line work and Lovecraft's story that makes this awesome.
This file is a .cbr file and you will need a Comic reader to view it with. I suggest Comical. It is a quick download, and very easy to use.

sunday night post
so over the weekend lindsay and i got a shitload of new comics and dvds and soon, hopefully, there will be some reviews of them.
some short reviews:
Blackest Night #1
If you've been following the events in recent green lantern issues you'll know what's up. simply put, this is the best superhero comic i've read this month. the black lantern corps has risen, and no flesh shall be spared. surprisingly brutal and violent. get it before it goes into second and third printings, its gonna be hot!
Creepy #1
Dark Horse brings back this beloved horror title with great results. a thick 48 pager with no adds and talent like alex toth(!), eric powell, angelo torres, and berni wrightson (!!!!). definantly get on board for this. dear uncle creepy, it's been years......
Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep #1
Philip K. Dick's classic novel, the inspiration for the film Blade Runner, is presented in its entirety in graphic format. not a line of the original novel is taken out, all with stellar artwork. hopefully it will bring all sorts of new fans to this man's work. features an essay about P.K.D. by Warren Ellis, which is quite insightful. i never knew that P.K.D. tried to rat out other sf writers, crazy.
also got the dvd release of Dario Argento's "Four Flies On Grey Velvet" which I haven't gotten around to watching yet. I used to have a badly recorded and dubbed version on vhs, but the picture quality was so bad it was unwatchable. can't wait to see his "lost film" remastered. I'll let you know what it's all about soon.
i enjoyed my sunday off work today. it'll probably be the last one i have for a long time.

second post
so i guess i've figured out how to post albums and such on here, expect some shit soon, possibly next post.
read the entire Kull six issue mini-series that Dark Horse comics put out last year in one sitting last night. If you are a fan of Robert E. Howard adaptations, "Heroic fantasy", or just a fan of good comics then i strongly suggest reading this. The monster Etrigor looks badass, and there's enough blood and action for another book in these six issues. I only hope Dark Horse keeps this up. Their ongoing Conan monthly should be at the top of every comic fan's pull list also.
Now if only they would get off their asses and do something with all those Robocop comics they published years ago, like putting out an omnibus edition like they have been with their other licensed titles (indiana jones, star wars, terminator, aliens, predator, etc)....
On a personal note, today is Wednesday, July 15th. I work at a place where wednesday is our busiest day. for the past 3-4 months i have been working from 11 to close every wednesday, and i haven't had a wednesday off all year long...until today. You might not be able to pick up through white text on a black background how excited I am to not have to go to that hellhole today, but believe me, I'm fucking thrilled.
