Dementia - "Recuperate From Reality"

After nothing but regional punk and metal bands, I decided it was again time to post some unheard (and potentially cheesy) metal, so here is the only release from Dementia, who, according to the metal archives, are either from Wisconsin or Chicago, so you can take your pick on that one. One look at that cover should tell you what you're in for. Musically this is nothing life changing, it's early 90's thrash metal, mostly mid-tempo, but there are some moments of speed to be found on here, like the last track, "Say Your Prayers". In truth, there are some pretty excellent riffs and some long songs on this album, which, again, according to the metal archives, had very bad distribution in america and "remains a rare treat".(I found this cd at a used bookstore for a dollar, and recently saw a still sealed copy of it in a record store in Richlands, Virginia!) The only gripe I have is with the vocals. Sometimes they are annoying as hell, and other times they fit the mood of the song well. If you are expecting total balls to the wall thrash then you might be disappointed with this album, but if you are a metal fan and want to hear something you might never have heard before then give it a try.

Dempsey & Eleven Shot By Two Split Tour Tape

This tape is a mystery. I have had this tape since June 24th, 1998, when I saw both bands at the Commerce street show space in Johnson City, along with a band called God Hates Computers that I recall having a record by at one time, and local favorites Kakistocracy. Why is this tape a mystery? Simple. I have lost all the packaging to this tape, I don't know any of the song names, but what I do know is that this split is awesome. I have listened to it many, many times, and now here it is for you.

Dempsey is first up (at least for me), with eight tracks of some great noisy, chaotic hardcore containing a healthy dose of atmospheric keyboards. The keyboardist also has a few solo piano pieces, including an old rag-time piece and a song about his hatred for computer nerds. I recall their set pretty well, they played a short, loud, intense set, the keyboardist joking between songs with the other band members, and at one point he put aluminum foil down on top of his keyboard, setting little plastic army men and other small toys on top of it, pouring lighter fluid on it, then setting it on fire, continuing to play. I was impressed.

Eleven Shot By Two offer us some more chaotic hardcore, even if the beginning of the first track does throw me a little because I think it's going to sound like early Dinosaur Jr., but then it's raging hardcore. I always listened to the Dempsey side more, but the 11SB2 side is awesome as well, it's definitely grown on me more over the years. Some of the tracks on their side segued into each, so I left those tracks as one mp3.

I'm putting this up because there is absolutely NOTHING about either of these bands online except for a shitty review of their show on my old show reviews page. I hope somebody in either of these bands comes across this and helps me fill in the blanks on this great tape.

Anyone who wants to hear some really good, unheard punk rock would be a fool to not download this.

The Skudz - "Think For Yrself"

In the mid 90's, Knoxville, Tennessee, a scant 90 minutes away from where I live, was a hotbed of punk rock bands. There were The Malignmen, who's first 7" was posted here, there was K.P.D. (and if anyone out there has any of their recordings, if there are any, please let me know!!), and there were these guys, probably my favorite of the bunch, even though I never got to see them while they were around, and only upon moving to Knoxville in 2000 did I hear this record. This record is something I've wanted to add to the Northeast Tennessee Punk And Metal Archives since I decided to start archiving the shit in the first place. What we have here is 18 sloppy yet fun punk songs in 28 minutes, including a cover of The Dicks' "Hate The Police". I would almost venture that The Dicks were one of the major inspirations for this band, as they use the same guitar sound, that jangly sound that we all love. The cover was from a Calvin Klein ad that got C.K. in a lot of trouble, apparently...and my guess at the hand scrawled "FUCK K.P.D." at the top of the cover is that it's not only a jab at the Knoxville Police Department but also the band of the same name. I could be wrong on that last count.

I recommend this HIGHLY, as to my knowledge The Skudz were the only band from this region that actually released an LP. They also released a 7" entitled "Kill Whitey" and I will be putting that up soon also. But for now, enjoy this slice of mid 90's Northeast Tennessee punk fucking rock! And if there's anyone from The Skudz who comes across this, I hope that your glad to see someone cared enough about this record to try to preserve it and spread it around, because it is fucking great, and more people (from Tennessee or not) need to hear it, and I hope that you drop me a line!

Once again, this was converted from a tape of the LP, so the sound quality might not be the best, but it's fucking punk rock, so who cares?

Here is a record that I've wanted to post since the beginning of this blog, and now I finally can. Here is the only 7" by Deathbag, six tracks of Discharge/Raw Power influenced punk rock. These guys played our old house twice, the first time we had heard the demo (it'll be up here soon), the second time Jesse, their drummer, sent me a package of tapes and there was this on one of the tapes. So I listened to the tape of the 7", loved it, and by the time they came back I knew the songs. I may be mistaken, but I do believe that this is a Scummified first, as I've tried to find these mp3's online but the only ones I could find are tracks from their split 7" with Witch Hunt, so this could be the only place to find these online. After Deathbag split up, their guitarist/vocalist and drummer switched instruments (to bass and guitar respectively) and started No Fucker, who released two 7" and two splits with Disclose before calling it a day. I'm biased in that I think these dudes can do no wrong. This record is killer, fast, raw, and they even cover Raw Power's "Fuck Authority", cowbell and all. Lyrics are included in the file.

A note on the mp3's: these were made from a tape of the 7", since I can convert tapes but not records...I think it adds to the rawness. I highly encourage all regular readers of this blog, if there are any, to get this. It is one of my favorite records that I own, and if you like fast punk rock at all then please check this out.

Plan 9 - '98 Demo

Here's the story:

In middle school I started listening to punk rock and getting into the whole subculture of it. I started a shitty band in 8th grade, we played 2 shows in our year and a half existence(?) and called it quits. This was around the time I started high school, where I met two older dudes (they could drive!) who were into Misfits/Danzig, Motorhead, Black Flag, etc...it was natural that we start a band.

Plan 9 was born.

The initial incarnation was David Stacy on vocals, Daniel Dyck on guitars (it's pronounced like LIKE), yours truly on bass, and 12 year old drummer Marcus Durham. We learned some Misfits and Queers songs, wrote some originals, and generally pissed off Marcus' parents. I do believe that his mother to this day still dislikes me for purposefully setting my hand on fire in her living room, but that's besides the point. We would practice in his garage, the covers of songs were horrible (whole solo part of "Some Kinda Hate" missing, I recall), and the originals, while not rousing punk anthems by any means, were at least better than the Korn/Deftones spew that almost every other band in this area was playing at this time. We played some good shows, the first time I ever played a show out of state was with this band (and there's a tape of this but you'll never hear it), and we were young punks having fun, starting trouble, and playing shitty music. Which brings me to this tape. What you are about to hear is our ONLY recorded output, a two song demo tape that cost us $475 to record. It was released by us in very small quantities, I think only about 25-30 tapes were made. We gave them out at shows, to friends, put some on consignment in local music stores, and they all disappeared. Even I had lost my copy of it, the original master tape (but I still have the actual reel it was recorded on).......

I thought that this tape was lost to me forever.

Then a record store re-opened in Johnson City over a year ago, and a friend of mine who worked there was going through tapes from the old store, when lo and behold, there it was, one of the copies I took to them on consignment. It was given to Marcus, but since he was not on this recording (a drummer by the name of Danny Roberts is), he gave it to me, and now here it is, for you, the lost Plan 9 demo. Two tracks in under 4 minutes, very simple punk.

I thought about waxing poetic about this and the dreams of my youth and punk rock aspirations and so forth, but decided against it. It's just two damn songs of mid tempo teenage aggression fueled punk rock. So this post is for David S., Daniel D., Marcus D., Danny R., Sarah E. from Las Vegas who played 2nd guitar for us for a little while, I hope you're doing great in whatever direction life has put you in, and for all those who were around at this time.

Here is a 7" by Subversion, a forgotten punk band from Belgium. This 7" was released way after the band broke up, and contains four tracks from the tape compilation "Second Time Around" released by Punk, Etc, and two tracks from the "Bollox To The Gonads - Here's The Testicles" compilation LP put out by Pax Records. Once again, thanks to Jesse for introducing this band to me. This record is great, driving and raw d-beat (comparisons to Discharge are inevitable) from a band that time has sadly forgotten.

Here is a short, but absolutely killer 6 track offering from Rise, a band that I talked about in the early days of Scummified. They are from Japan and play ripping hardcore punk rock, definitely keeping the spirits burning, but I STILL cannot find any info on this band or their elusive demo that I once had a tape copy of, if interested in hearing two tracks from that, please go here. Otherwise, this little EP is great punk rock from a country that, it seems to me, has got punk rock down to a fucking science.

Spring Break Shark Attack

Spring Break Shark Attack were my good buddies Zack Mullins and Adam Brewer, 2 of the punkest mothers you've never heard or met. what makes them so punk? the better question is, what doesn't? this demo is 6 tracks in 7 minutes of noisy, fucked up lo-fi punk rock that is more punk than any band you can think of. S.B.S.A. lasted only about a year, and they're both still doing stuff right now (Adam's new band, Globsters, just released their first 7'' which I'm hoping to post soon!), but this is truly one from the ages. punk rock from the mountains of southeastern Kentucky. check it out!

Now that halloween is over with, let's get back to some good ol' unheard southern punk rock, this time from Abingdon, VA's The Abnormalities. Between '97 and '99 I saw these dudes and played shows with them more than probably any other band ever. Musically they remind me of Negative Approach in a way, but maybe not as tough sounding. Sadly, I haven't heard from any of them, except bassist Josh in years upon years. My friend Mike found this cd and ripped it for me, but I have no cover scans or even song names for you. Some songs are tagged with what I'm pretty sure are the names but I could be wrong. If anyone out there has scans, tracklists, old pictures of this band, anything, or if you were in this band and stumble across this, get in touch with me, I'd love to hear from any of you guys. but for now, enjoy some lost and unheard southwest virginia punk rock!

I'm taking a break on the soundtracks for this post (but don't worry, there will be more before halloween you little devils) because i wanted to share a rare recording of Killer Panther, a short lived band from Whitesburg, Kentucky. they were the self proclaimed "crust soundtrack to mountaintop removal" and this recording was done live to my 4 track in the basement of the old sullivan gardens house. Killer Panther on this recording was derek - vox and guitar, joe - guitar, matt - bass, evan - bass, and nathan - drums. it's just 3 songs, and supposedly there are some other random recordings out there of this band and if i can get my hand on them they'll be making their way to you also.

so about 10 years ago i recieved a package in my mail from a friendly fellow in japan who ran the still around but not updated in 7 years Unexpected Fast Sounds website and on one of these long gone tapes was a demo from a japanese band called Rise. the demo blew me away, but i cannot find anything about them anywhere. apparently too many bands called rise have existed. so, here's my idea. i'm going to post the 2 songs from rise that i have in hopes someone out there know's about this band and can help me out.

Here's a cd-r demo i've been wanting to post for a while, hell, i've been wanting to listen to it for a while. i had misplaced it in a friends cd book years ago unknowingly and thought it long lost, but here it is, for all of you to enjoy. i really don't know much about this band, i saw them once in Asheville in 2003 and got this cd there and promptly never heard of them again. i do know it features ex- face down in shit members, they sound like they worship at the altar of "Animosity" era Corrosion Of Conformity at times, and that there are a few live photos of them but next to no information on them anywhere.

here is a split live recording of 2 bands, They Live and Fowlwawahl. They Live is just what Assgasm called ourselves before we changed it to our more family friendly moniker. Fowlwawahl is brutal, black metal influenced dual guitar wizardry from Kentucky, and features members of Killer Panther. Like it says above, these 8 tracks were recorded live. This recording of Assgasm is actually our first recording, it's interesting to listen to and then compare to the last recording.

I don't know anything about this band, other than that at one time they were either going to be or were called Death From Above , and that this cd is fucking punk rock. included are the lyric sheet/insert scans.

The 30th Post Unveiling: The Apocalyptic Urinal & Carmalita Split Tape.

Finally, after 10 years of obscurity and copies lost and found, here is the Apocalyptic Urinal and Carmalita split demo cassette.
A.U. was me and Patrick Scardo, who lived in Clintwood, VA. we wanted to start a band together and play fast, pissed off hardcore...so we set up a show and played it without ever practicing. we learned a hellnation song on the ride to the show and the rest of the show was just insanity. now keep in mind we had never practiced. we played the hellnation song first because we kinda knew it. before the show it was decided that on that song that i would play guitar, and patrick would drum and do vocals at the same time. we kick into the song, patrick starts screaming, and it was the highest pitched fucking maniacal shit i have ever heard that came from his mouth. it made me laugh, hard, while trying to play the song. we play the song, people applaud, and then we just did about 10 more minutes of 30 second "songs" and talked shit in between. someone told me it sounded like "a train full of girl scouts being raped while the train derailed" and that was pretty accurate. this was in january 1999. we played another show shortly thereafter, then we played a show the day our part of the split was recorded (unfortunately we didn't record the show because that would've been fucking hilarious), and then one more sporadic improv show a year or 2 later and that was it. the show that happened the day this was recorded was some girls birthday party at a public pool near clintwood, and we arrive, it's not yet evening and we were trashed. we talked shit to people and i seem to vaguely recall some rednecks harassing us at pizza hut later in the night.

i haven't talked to Patrick in a few years. he was in the great, now defunct Allergic To Bullshit (not that one, the other one) and was also in the Semen Demons with motherfuckin' Ernarchy, and now I hear he is a goat farmer somewhere in Virginia. I hope he gets on a computer and for the fuck of it types in "apocalyptic urinal" and this pops up. i miss you man. i hope life is treating you well.

anyways, this was recorded live in patrick's basement, on one of those hand-held tape recorders, and i'm gonna go ahead and not apologize for the sound quality.
Carmalita were a band from southeast Kentucky comprised of Derek Eagle, bad-ass Doug Reynolds, and old man Steve Smith. I don't know how many shows they played, but i do know of one where they played in some schools gymnasium and no one wanted to go anywhere near them because when they played it was all out violence. If I remember correctly their part of the split was recorded in a friend's garage on a karaoke machine. I will also go on record saying that their part of the split is some of my favorite punk rock EVER. i had this edited to different tracks as best as i could, but kept all the inbetween song banter and fuck-up's, like the "what the fuck?!!?" moment (listen and you'll know). this is fast, pissed off, funny, and they even do a superb cover of the Misfits' "Return Of The Fly". Every time i listen to this it makes me smile.

i think i personally made about 15-20 of these tapes. the original master tapes are LONG gone, and this tape was one of the ones i recorded and gave out that made its way back to me years ago. in the interim its been in floors, had shit spilled on it, got stuck in a tape deck once, and its so fucking lucky i didn't break it. Now here it is, in mp3 form, for you.

A BIG THANKS to Neal, who definitely sealed the deal on this. He put up with me pestering him for months to convert it for me, and he finally did and he kicked it's fucking ass. I even saw him type the word "fuck" for the first time ever. also, i will apologize for the tracks just saying "apocalyptic urinal - track 1" and so on. i knew the a.u. song names (except for the first improv track's name) but the carmalita track list is also in a landfill somewhere, and until the names of the songs are discovered none of the songs will be named.

also, i have an mp3 of the tape in its entirety and if you would like to hear it without track edits, as one 20 minute long mp3, let me know.

Humanicide - Dark Lord Mosh Attack CD

Here's Greensboro, North Carolina's Humanicide, a crust as fuck band featuring members of Blacken The Skies, P.C.Penis, and more. At one point in time Derek from Hadaka Matsuri was in this band but I'm pretty sure he's not on this cd...although he does get credited. Humanicide pretty much lived at the Cedar St. House in Greensboro, and many a chaotic show happened there. anyways, this isn't the best tagged post ever, i'll warn you now. there was no track listing printed with the cd, but there was a full insert which i've scanned to help you name the songs, if you so choose. i thought about doing it, but it's pretty fucking impossible.

Finally, after years of knowing about this tape and hearing it while fucked up at friends house but never having a copy of it, i present to you the long lost Monolith tape. Monolith was like kingsport's answer to napalm death and morbid saint, if N.D. and M.S. were playing at some southern states wrestling event at the civic auditorium. Even though they never achieve N.D. like speed (exceept the last 11 second track), the riffs are very thrash metal and the sound is mean, tough, dark, and very metal. not much is known about this tape other than that it was recorded between '92-'94 somewhere on center street in kingsport...right up the road from me probably. sadly, there is no original cover art, but BIG thanks to Ben for ripping his tape copy of it. the cover included he also made because he's that much of a trooper. this is true appalachian metal. i hope you enjoy.

Cheap Skate

It's time for another trip down Northeast TN Punk Rock Lane with Cheap Skate.
Cheap Skate was a pop punk/ska band started by Austin Goins(vocals, guitar), Dusty Evans (bass, vocals) and Kevin Masters (drums, vocals). they recorded their first 7 song demo in early 1997. Summer of '97 was when I met Austin and Dusty at the shirt-lived "Our Place" hangout on Wilcox Drive in Kingsport. They gave me their demo and a sticker (wow, a punk band around here who already had merch!!) and we all became friends, even to this day. my old band Plan 9 (expect stuff up here from them soon) and Cheap Skate played a lot of shows together, sometimes even borrowing austin for guitar or drums when our guitarist either couldnt make it or our drummers sucked. one show in particular stands out in mind in Erwin(?), TN on the back porch of someones trailer...somehow i started cooking in their kitchen and kids grabbed me to dance during cheap skate and i left bacon frying in a skillet and almost burned the trailer down. oops.
anyways, i don't have any artwork or even pictures of this to post, but will post some when i find/get them. the music, however, is 17 tracks of ramones/screeching weasel influenced pop punk with some ska punk songs thrown in for good measure. 1-10 is the "Official Beagle" tape, recorded in 1998 by the man who ran Our Place. (it should be known that Cheap Skate won a "battle of the bands" competition in summer of 1998 and won free studio time, which they used to record this, and that by this time they had added second guitarist J.D. Collette, later of hadaka matsuri and long time friend, who appears on this recording) 11-17 is the bands original tape demo in all its glory. the beginning of "dead old man" on the demo sounds funny but it's from a 12 year old tape that someone converted to .wma, then i converted all tracks to mp3.
