Nerve Endings - "Living Minimally"

I am making up for four years of lost time tonight. Here is the first full length from Bristol TN/VA's own Nerve Endings. Comparisons can be made to such bands as Black Flag, The Jesus Lizard, etc, but that would be missing the point. The point is is that these guys fucking rule. They put on great live shows, this cd kills, and they are terrific guys to boot. I love this cd, and i hope that you all enjoy it too. Check out their facebook page and grab a copy of this for yourself, and if they play around where you live, make sure you go see them. They MIGHT play some Black Flag covers if you're lucky, and even if they don't, you'll still be lucky that you got to see such a damn good band.

Manic Scum - "Better Left Undead"

From the hills and polluted industrial wastelands of northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia comes the debut ep from Manic Scum. Stalwart watchers of this blog may recall hearing these songs before, and you would be right. Manic Scum was started by Alex Depew and Neal Williams, who both were in Mental Shock with Dave Killebrew and myself, where these songs originated. Truth be told, the songs "Blood Junkies", and "Haunt Of Fear" were both written by me, and I also wrote the music to "Entombed For Eternity". The songs pretty much are the same as the older, very grimly produced (ok, no production at all) versions, which can be found here. If you already enjoy the Mental Shock versions of these songs, however, you will find subtle little changes in the executions of riffs, drum patterns, etc, and as a collaborator on these songs I have to admit that these versions are THE representations of how sick the M.S. stuff could have been. The recording is very brutal, everything is in your face and waiting to rip it off.  Fans of bands like Repulsion, Napalm Death, Autopsy, and most grind/death freaks will find something to like in these 11 and a half minutes.

Adam Brewer is back, and if you missed him on his recent mini-tour, then don't fear, because here is his newest record, the appropriately titled  "Rock And Roll Misery" ep. This could be the ultimate Globsters release, the songs are short, catchy, and a bit more vicious and in your face. Includes the soon to be classics "Ultimate Beefcake" and "Freddy Krueger". It is my opinion that the song "Deny The Belief" may be the greatest Globsters song ever, just check out these lyrics:

"Deny the belief of a christian god/just like king diamond did/deny the belief of a christian god/just like kevin sullivan did/every time god shows his face i kill myself with dope"

Any song that mentions King Diamond, Kevin Sullivan, and rips off a Mutiilation line gets my vote. Anyways, this rip has full scans and all that jazz, and if you like it, buy it!

Here is some ultra-crushing doom, once again from the hills of Kentucky, and this one is some heavy shit indeed, my friends. I saw them and Tombstalker at the Hideaway a couple of weeks back and they absolutely destroyed everything. These three guys, excellent chaps all around, lay waste to these four tracks, including a Saint Vitus cover, and any fan of bands like Noothgrush, Sleep, etc, would be wise to check this out. Did I mention that this is almost an hour long? Get real stoned for this one. I know I did.

Samurai John - "Integrity" EP

I'm delving way back into the local and regional archives for this post, folks. If you are from around the area I live and were into punk rock/hardcore or just going to shows in the mid-late 90's, there might be a chance that you remember Samurai John. If that name doesn't ring a bell, perhaps you'll remember Truth Be Known, the band that S.J. evolved into after releasing this tape, the "Integrity" e.p. This is six tracks of melodic, sing along hardcore with a slight Pennywise feel to it, and even if upon reading that sentence you don't want to check it out, you really should check it out and think to yourself that this is from Norton, Virginia, in the mid-nineties, and think about what a small, enclosed little town that is and think that a band like that could exist there. I have been to Norton many a time, and it boggles my mind. When asked about his reminiscences of Samurai John, vocalist Steve Shell, who is currently in a band called JUST DIE!, had this to say:

"SJ was a band that was all about doing the best it could given where it was from. With literally zero local influences, we wanted to be Pennywise and a few other bands pretty bad. We probably took ourselves way too seriously, but it was fun."

And in the end, why else would you be making music in the first place? Listening to this while I was ripping it was the first time I had heard it in almost 14 years, and I'm willing to bet there are those out there who haven't even thought of this band in that long. And for those of you just stumbling upon it for the first time, check it out. It's nothing life changing, but a great example of what the TN/VA/KY regional scene was like in the mid-late 90's. Memories Of A Lifetime - The Adam Brewer Story.

Here is something I've wanted to do with Scummified for a long time....post a movie. A few months ago, the Appalachian Media Institute made a short (9 min) documentary about Adam Brewer, the one man force of nature that is Globsters. He was recently kind enough to send me a copy, which I am now kind enough to share with you. This movie is 9 minutes long people, you have no excuse to not download it. It is Adam talking about all the things that make him a rad person, his love for his dogs, knives, punk rock, his like/dislike of the area he lives in, (I've lived in Hazard, KY too...and it sucks) and it is all interspersed with a little live footage (the hit "Pretty Women" is included).

I love Adam, and I love this documentary. I wish it could've been a little longer though, but that's alright. You must check this out, Globsters fan or not. It is nicely shot, short, and is a .avi file. Check it out.

Globsters - Totally Punk 7"

Here is Globster's first 7", the appropriately titled "Totally Punk". for those who have no idea what this is, it is my good friend Adam Brewer, armed with samples from old punk records (plus real instruments too), and a totally, well, punk attitude. Adam is such a cool guy. He loves punk rock, punk jackets, and (i hope this doesn't embarrass him) is the only person i know who sheds his clothes as fast as he does. kind of like a nice, southeastern kentucky g.g. allin, if you will. anyways, this 7" is here, in it's entirety, complete with cover scans. 8 songs of punk fucking rock!!

Spring Break Shark Attack

Spring Break Shark Attack were my good buddies Zack Mullins and Adam Brewer, 2 of the punkest mothers you've never heard or met. what makes them so punk? the better question is, what doesn't? this demo is 6 tracks in 7 minutes of noisy, fucked up lo-fi punk rock that is more punk than any band you can think of. S.B.S.A. lasted only about a year, and they're both still doing stuff right now (Adam's new band, Globsters, just released their first 7'' which I'm hoping to post soon!), but this is truly one from the ages. punk rock from the mountains of southeastern Kentucky. check it out!

Now that halloween is over with, let's get back to some good ol' unheard southern punk rock, this time from Abingdon, VA's The Abnormalities. Between '97 and '99 I saw these dudes and played shows with them more than probably any other band ever. Musically they remind me of Negative Approach in a way, but maybe not as tough sounding. Sadly, I haven't heard from any of them, except bassist Josh in years upon years. My friend Mike found this cd and ripped it for me, but I have no cover scans or even song names for you. Some songs are tagged with what I'm pretty sure are the names but I could be wrong. If anyone out there has scans, tracklists, old pictures of this band, anything, or if you were in this band and stumble across this, get in touch with me, I'd love to hear from any of you guys. but for now, enjoy some lost and unheard southwest virginia punk rock!

Killer Panther - Live 2007

I'm taking a break on the soundtracks for this post (but don't worry, there will be more before halloween you little devils) because i wanted to share a rare recording of Killer Panther, a short lived band from Whitesburg, Kentucky. they were the self proclaimed "crust soundtrack to mountaintop removal" and this recording was done live to my 4 track in the basement of the old sullivan gardens house. Killer Panther on this recording was derek - vox and guitar, joe - guitar, matt - bass, evan - bass, and nathan - drums. it's just 3 songs, and supposedly there are some other random recordings out there of this band and if i can get my hand on them they'll be making their way to you also.

The 30th Post Unveiling: The Apocalyptic Urinal & Carmalita Split Tape.

Finally, after 10 years of obscurity and copies lost and found, here is the Apocalyptic Urinal and Carmalita split demo cassette.
A.U. was me and Patrick Scardo, who lived in Clintwood, VA. we wanted to start a band together and play fast, pissed off hardcore...so we set up a show and played it without ever practicing. we learned a hellnation song on the ride to the show and the rest of the show was just insanity. now keep in mind we had never practiced. we played the hellnation song first because we kinda knew it. before the show it was decided that on that song that i would play guitar, and patrick would drum and do vocals at the same time. we kick into the song, patrick starts screaming, and it was the highest pitched fucking maniacal shit i have ever heard that came from his mouth. it made me laugh, hard, while trying to play the song. we play the song, people applaud, and then we just did about 10 more minutes of 30 second "songs" and talked shit in between. someone told me it sounded like "a train full of girl scouts being raped while the train derailed" and that was pretty accurate. this was in january 1999. we played another show shortly thereafter, then we played a show the day our part of the split was recorded (unfortunately we didn't record the show because that would've been fucking hilarious), and then one more sporadic improv show a year or 2 later and that was it. the show that happened the day this was recorded was some girls birthday party at a public pool near clintwood, and we arrive, it's not yet evening and we were trashed. we talked shit to people and i seem to vaguely recall some rednecks harassing us at pizza hut later in the night.

i haven't talked to Patrick in a few years. he was in the great, now defunct Allergic To Bullshit (not that one, the other one) and was also in the Semen Demons with motherfuckin' Ernarchy, and now I hear he is a goat farmer somewhere in Virginia. I hope he gets on a computer and for the fuck of it types in "apocalyptic urinal" and this pops up. i miss you man. i hope life is treating you well.

anyways, this was recorded live in patrick's basement, on one of those hand-held tape recorders, and i'm gonna go ahead and not apologize for the sound quality.
Carmalita were a band from southeast Kentucky comprised of Derek Eagle, bad-ass Doug Reynolds, and old man Steve Smith. I don't know how many shows they played, but i do know of one where they played in some schools gymnasium and no one wanted to go anywhere near them because when they played it was all out violence. If I remember correctly their part of the split was recorded in a friend's garage on a karaoke machine. I will also go on record saying that their part of the split is some of my favorite punk rock EVER. i had this edited to different tracks as best as i could, but kept all the inbetween song banter and fuck-up's, like the "what the fuck?!!?" moment (listen and you'll know). this is fast, pissed off, funny, and they even do a superb cover of the Misfits' "Return Of The Fly". Every time i listen to this it makes me smile.

i think i personally made about 15-20 of these tapes. the original master tapes are LONG gone, and this tape was one of the ones i recorded and gave out that made its way back to me years ago. in the interim its been in floors, had shit spilled on it, got stuck in a tape deck once, and its so fucking lucky i didn't break it. Now here it is, in mp3 form, for you.

A BIG THANKS to Neal, who definitely sealed the deal on this. He put up with me pestering him for months to convert it for me, and he finally did and he kicked it's fucking ass. I even saw him type the word "fuck" for the first time ever. also, i will apologize for the tracks just saying "apocalyptic urinal - track 1" and so on. i knew the a.u. song names (except for the first improv track's name) but the carmalita track list is also in a landfill somewhere, and until the names of the songs are discovered none of the songs will be named.

also, i have an mp3 of the tape in its entirety and if you would like to hear it without track edits, as one 20 minute long mp3, let me know.

The Malignmen

Here's a 7'' i've been looking for for a while, Knoxville's infamous Malignmen.

these guys played with bands like the murder junkies and the undead, so if that doesn't give you an idea of what they sound like then nothing will. they played in kingsport and johnson city alot in 97-98, then disbanded. guitarist Jaw went on to form the american plague.

plan 9 played with them at Our Place in 1997...i remember the singer came off as an asshole to me, but maybe he was just trying to be punker than thou or something, who knows.
anyways, this is another vital piece of northeast tennessee punk rock history, and it's taken me forever to find mp3's of it. (thank you soulseek!)

TWENTIETH POST MEGA POST!

This is the 20th post since i began Scummified, so here is something special for everyone. Here are five demos from five very different bands, all from this area. I hope you enjoy. its now 9pm on August 29th, and i started this project this morning. Please download, and PLEASE, leave me some comments, huh? i worked really hard for everyone to hear some of the unique musical heritage this region has, and will continue striving to archive only the best punk rock, hardcore, and metal this area had to offer.

The Auditors Will Be Audited, The Accountants Will Be Held To Account
A two piece (guitar/drums) from the infamous Lenoir House, it was j.d. (ex-hadaka matsuri/jacuzzi suicide/kakistocracy) and me, and we were, as evan put it so rightly, "influenced by thin lizzy and blastbeats". we played a lot at the lenoir house, around town and regionally, and we also toured for 10 days in 2004 (playing chattanooga and murfreesboro,tn, bloomington, indiana, oberlin, ohio, pittsburgh, pa, athens, ohio).
j.d. ripped these tracks (the ones i ripped skipped) but i found the tape and scanned the cover and inside, which is also included. the demo cassette was only 6 tracks, but also included here is an unreleased track which was supposed to go on a compilation cd put together by travis from asshole parade, but never happened.

The Scams
The Scams were a local band who existed for quite a long time, only recently disbanding this year. members were also in The Business Machines (stuff by them coming soon!), Dissociative Rhythm Madness (also disbanded recently), and more. This demo, which i think is the last one they did (but i could be wrong),came out in 2007and finds them experimenting with almost "cowpunk" like sounds mixed in with their traditional hardcore attack. these guys are missed, a band that got better with each show up until the end of their existence. they were destroyers.

Greed Disease
Another of my bands from over the years, Greed Disease was a two piece (me-bass/j.p-drums) anarchopunk band. the songs on this demo are all political and listening to it now i can tell it was written by 19 year old "activist(active in getting high, thats for sure) anarchist" me...and is it embarassing? not really. do i still espouse the same beliefs i did almost 10 years ago? some, yeah, but not all. this demo was recorded at 2 seperate times, first 7 songs in summer 2001, 8-10 were recorded 2000. this demo made its rounds locally apparently...people still remember greed disease even though we never played a show. oh well.

Mind Sludge
This demo is six tracks of total napalm death worshipping brutal, detuned crust-grind. a newer breed of local band, and sick as shit too. playing shows regularly around the area, so check 'em out. if i told you what other bands these kids were in it'd fill up a page.

Black Winter Holocaust
Black Winter Holocaust is a two piece black metal band from the mountains of southwest Virginia. Not much is known about this elusive duo. they do have a myspace, but there isn't very much on it. so far this is their only recorded output, four tracks of Immortal influenced cold appalachian black metal.

two unsung regional bands...

well, here's a music post for you all. heres two demos from two regional punk bands that are sadly no more.

Rise From Ruin is a hardcore band that existed in Knoxville, TN around the turn of the millenium. i remember moving to knoxville in august of 2000 and seeing them play at the hell house, this house on james agee street that had some pretty damn good shows. they play chaotic screamy hardcore in the vein of orchid and other bands. this is a 7 song demo that they gave me when Hadaka Matsuri played with them in Johnson City. they were really nice guys, and if any of them happen to see this, please get in touch with me. this includes the cover and insert scans.

Sink The Fucker (a.k.a. Shovelfight) is a hardcore band from Asheville, N.C. that play fast, screamy hardcore and features the drummer from Kakistocracy on guitar and tattooist extraordinaire danny reed on vocals. this demo was given to me when hadaka matsuri played with them and Yaphet Kotto in asheville years ago. there is no track listing or artwork with it (because they never gave me that...) so if any of you in S.T.F. see this, hook me up!
