Manic Scum - "Better Left Undead"

From the hills and polluted industrial wastelands of northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia comes the debut ep from Manic Scum. Stalwart watchers of this blog may recall hearing these songs before, and you would be right. Manic Scum was started by Alex Depew and Neal Williams, who both were in Mental Shock with Dave Killebrew and myself, where these songs originated. Truth be told, the songs "Blood Junkies", and "Haunt Of Fear" were both written by me, and I also wrote the music to "Entombed For Eternity". The songs pretty much are the same as the older, very grimly produced (ok, no production at all) versions, which can be found here. If you already enjoy the Mental Shock versions of these songs, however, you will find subtle little changes in the executions of riffs, drum patterns, etc, and as a collaborator on these songs I have to admit that these versions are THE representations of how sick the M.S. stuff could have been. The recording is very brutal, everything is in your face and waiting to rip it off.  Fans of bands like Repulsion, Napalm Death, Autopsy, and most grind/death freaks will find something to like in these 11 and a half minutes.

Discordance Axis - "The Inalienable Dreamless"

Here is the last full-length from Discordance Axis. D.A. were one of the best, lightning fast grind bands ever, with intelligent lyrics about topics like Philip K. Dick novels, and science fiction in general. Dave Witte was the drummer for this band, now he's in Municipal Waste and they're NOWHERE near as awesome as this band. I think the fact that this band has no bass is great, and the guitar playing is all over the fucking place. The vocalist also does the standard low growl/high scream vocal style so popular in grind these days, but D.A. did it best. I highly recommend this.

Assück is everything that is great about death metal in short, grinding hardcore songs. There's really not much to say about these two albums I'm offering you here, other than they are ultra brutal grinding metal with such an intense hardcore vibe that I don't see how anyone into metal and punk couln't be into this. In this file you will find TWO albums by this gone but not forgotten band, "Anti-Capital"(with "Blindspot" EP), and their final offering, "Misery Index", a total of 42 songs in under 40 minutes. Total fucking fury. Legend has it that they wouldn't play at the venue for Columbus Fest one year because the stage was too high, so they played on someones front porch down the street from the venue. I cannot imagine how brutal this show was, if it actually happened. Get these albums and play them loud.

Unseen Terror - "Human Error"

When I was first discovering punk rock and metal, there wasn't too many places around where I live that had that sort of music. We had a Record Bar at the mall, we had Dad's CD's (now sadly gone), and about a half hour away we had Back Door Records. It was at this store that you could find some obscure metal gems. The first things I remember ever getting from there was a tape copy of Slayer's "Reign In Blood", a cd version of Terrorizer's "World Downfall" (and how much those fucking albums destroy is surely documented elsewhere all over the 'net), and this, a tape by an unknown british band by the name of Unseen Terror. Back then I knew that Shane Embury was bassist in the mighty Napalm Death, so when I saw this tape and saw him listed as drummer I had to check it out. I bought it, took it home, and played it so much, well, it broke. Thank Cthulhu for the information age, where everything is digital, so I can listen to this album again and again. It is 20 songs of politically charged grind, when grind wasn't fucking stupid gurgle vocals and the like. Besides featuring Shane Embury of N.D., it also features Mitch Dickenson of Heresy on guitar and vocals, so if members of Napalm Death and Heresy doing fast, punkish grind is your thing then you have hit the jackpot! Did I mention they also have songs about Garfield?

Senseless Apocalypse - "13 Tracks EP"

Senseless Apocalypse was one of the first handful of Japanese hardcore punk bands I heard, and they friggin' blew me away. A long lost contact in Japan sent me some tapes and one of them was this seven inch on one side with the demo from Rise on the other side. I wore that tape out. So, the other day the great Terminal Escape posted a tape demo of theirs, and it made me dig out my copy of this 7". so here it is, for you all to enjoy. S.A. play extremely fast, a blurring wall of screamed vocals, blasting drums, and distorted guitar that just brings a smile to my face.

Left For Dead & Acrid - "Hacked To Pieces" Split LP

Here is one of the coolest looking records ever, the buzz saw shaped Left For Dead & Acrid split. Both bands are from Canada, but sound very different. Left For Dead rage through 9 tracks of pissed hardcore with some of the best lyrics ever and awesome double bass in parts, and Acrid tend to veer a little more towards the metal/grind side of hardcore with their 4 tracks. I like both bands, but it should be obvious that Left For Dead take this record.

Olho Seco - Olho Por Olho

Here is Olho Seco's first "full length", the insane "Olho Por Olho". Olho Seco were a Brazilian punk band who ventured more into grind territory with this release. They released some 7 inches, appeared on the legendary "Welcome To 1984" comp that M.R.R. put out, and kick ass. that's about all i can tell you. this album is 14 songs in 12:41. ear blasting grind punk noise!

Repulsion - "Horrified"

I'm posting this classic just because it's one of my all time absolute favorite albums in any genre of music, an album i can put on and listen to repeatedly, and just for the off chance there's some poor, misguided soul who hasn't yet been beaten utterly senseless by the sheer ferocity of this album. the only Repulsion full length, "Horrified" offers 18 tracks in 29 minutes of pure grinding madness. If you have NEVER heard Repulsion before, imagine Discharge, Celtic Frost, and Slayer in a blender turned to the highest setting. Contains such classics as "Eaten Alive", "Slaughter Of The Innocent", "Maggots In Your Coffin", the absolutely soul and body destroying "Festering Boils" AND "Bodily Dismemberment"...really every song is a winner.

Faster and more intense than just about anything else you'll hear from any band these days. Modern one man/pro-tools/gravity blast/porno/gore grind bands don't get the fucking picture anymore. gore grind is and will always be Repulsion, Impetigo, and Carcass! None better.

Truly, a masterpiece of metal.
