Sigh - "Ghastly Funeral Theatre"

Here is "Ghastly Funeral Theatre", an e.p. released by Japan's SIGH in 1997. This band pushes the boundaries of metal, always sounding to me like a metal band doing a lot of acid, watching a lot of 70's horror and listening to avant garde jazz/funk fusion/prog rock records. This e.p. is more squarely on the metal side of things, and is completely awesome, no filler tracks, just awesome metal. If you have never heard Sigh before, this is the place to start.

Also, what do you all think of the new banner up there?

  1. Sigh is awesome.

So is the new banner. I am a big fan/collector of the 50's-80's horror comics and they are being well represented here. I am seeing a House of Secrets base with other letters borrowed from House of Mystery, Haunt of Fear (my favorite EC title), etc.

In terms of the 60's-70's, I was always more into the Warren stuff (especially Eerie and Creepy) than House of Mystery/Secrets. That said, the DC stuff still had some great art in spite of its more Code-friendly content!

Regardless, great to see you repping the old horror comics. Hopefully you'll keep the banner (or some variation of it) for some time to come!

  2. the EC comics of the 50's are the greatest horror comics ever produced by mortal beings, then creepy/eerie. that's the pantheon. my love for horror comics (comics in general) will never diminish.
and i think the banner will stay. good eye spotting the Haunt Of Fear "F". in my collection the only original EC's i have are Haunt Of Fear #18 and Weird Science #11...and they're sacred to me.

  3. Congrats on owning some original EC's. My collection is largely made up of the 90's single issue reprints (and a few of the recent hardbound collections).

Haunt #18 is a fine original EC to own as well. That one showcases some of the more surreal tendencies of Ingles' art... The bizarre figures and faces make it infinitely memorable. Ghastly has always been my favorite EC artist.

I'm in the process of collecting first printings of Creepy/Eerie myself... not nearly as costly as the ECs, of course. I recently acquired Eerie #2 and #3. I'll be getting #4 in the next little while!

  4. Eerie #4 is the only issue of eerie i have. i have creepy 12, 36 (first richard corben art for warren), 50 (frazetta cover with uncle creepy, cousin eerie and vamirella!), and Creepy 1976 Yearbook.

Haunt Of Fear #18 is indeed a fine issue, even though my copy of it is in kinda rough shape, but my weird science #11 is in pretty good shape...if interested in seeing some cover scans of comics i own, go to my myspace page (www.myspace.com/dougpukeface) and check in my pics, then comics i own.

Graham Ingels is a master horror artist. He's in the pantheon of greats, with Berni Wrightson and Stephen Bissette the only ones who come close to evoking the mood and horror Ghastly was capable of. Hopefully soon i will have an interview with Mr. Bissette up on the blog!

  5. Cool new banner Doug. I've only heard a later Sigh album (Scenes from Hell) and it didn't really grab me, but I'm gonna give this a spin. Captcha = HATENT

  6. Better than anything else I've heard by Sigh before. Celtic Frost + Iron Maiden + Bathory ... ? The symphonic flourishes make them sound like a lot of other Cacophonous bands (not always sure that's a great thing ... ) but the prog/jazz/other bizarre touches strike me as pretty unique. Like the new banner and "mummified in scum" motto.

  7. mummified in scum has been the motto since starting...it was always just hidden by the banner until i figured out how to make it look better...
